Founded as an independent municipality in 1882, Enonkoski separated from Kerimäki and Heinävesi. Its own church was urgently needed after a tragic boat accident on Lake Ylä-Enonvesi in 1858, leading to the construction of a wooden church in 1859. The current wooden church dates from 1886.

The Enonkoski Museum, housed in a former granary from 1880 (relocated in 1917), highlights local livelihoods, including agriculture and the historic Kangassaari glass factory (operated 1857–1903) whose glass bottles are among Finland’s oldest surviving.

Enonkoski is home to Finland’s only Evangelical Lutheran monastery, founded in 1994 in Ihamaniemi. It functions as a retreat center with no permanent residents.

Nature & Outdoor Activities
Part of Kolovesi National Park lies within Enonkoski. Established in 1990, it spans about 23 km² and protects fragile species like the Saimaa ringed seal. The landscape is characterized by sheer rocky cliffs rising from Lake Saimaa, and it’s dotted with Stone Age rock paintings at sites like Ukonvuori.

Canoeing or boating through the park’s narrow inlets offers a sense of peace and prehistoric history.

Cross-country ski trails (25 km loop, lit and high-standard) are available for both winter skiing and summer activities like biking and Nordic walking.

Fishing—both open-water and ice fishing—is popular. Enonkoski hosts a winter fishing competition in Pirttilahti bay.

Foraging and wild culinary experiences are offered by Olo Centre, where guests can collect berries and mushrooms and prepare an outdoor meal over a campfire.

Typical Foods & Local Cuisine
While Enonkoski doesn't promote a single signature dish, the broader region cherishes Finnish classics such as kaalilaatikko, a cabbage casserole typically served with lingonberry jam.

At the Saimaa Harvest Festival (Enonkoski Local Market), visitors can enjoy seasonal local produce, homemade baked goods, fresh berries, juices, and griddle pancakes—plus receive a recipe for a traditional local dish.

Festivals & Events
Kesäkohinat, the summer opening celebration, features markets, pony rides, craft stalls, food vendors, music, and community activities.

The Saimaa Harvest Festival in September includes a local market with live music, harvest flavors, seasonal specialties, and sand sculpture displays.

During winter holidays, festive events like Joulukuhinat (Christmas buzz) and ice sculpture festivities light up the season.
